Über den Club
Geroskipou Beach Volley Club plays on the three municipal sand courts behind Geroskipou beach, on the eastern edge of Paphos. The courts belong to the municipality and stay open to everyone; the club maintains the nets and the lines, runs the evening sessions and the coaching, and hands the sand back to the public the rest of the time. We are around sixty members. Most of them work in Paphos and play after 18:00, when the sea breeze finally makes the sand bearable. Two pairs play the Cyprus circuit, and a dozen people touched a ball for the first time this spring. Both groups play on the same evenings, on purpose.
The spot, and what the club does with it
The three courts sit behind the Geroskipou beach car park, between the tamarisk trees and the water. They belong to the municipality, they are free, and anybody can walk on and play. That does not change because a club exists: what we do is keep the nets tight, replace the lines when they tear, and put a schedule on the sand so that people who arrive alone find somebody to play with.
Sessions start at 18:00 on weekdays, when the breeze comes in from the sea and the sand stops burning. Weekend mornings we are on the courts from 09:00 and gone by noon. Court 01 is the one nearest the water and the one everybody wants; Courts 02 and 03 are quieter and are where the beginners usually end up on their first evening.
Come with water, sunscreen and a cap. We bring the balls. If you have never played on sand, say so when you arrive: somebody will put you on a net with people who will not spike at your face.
